What is Homeopathy

“Similia Similbus Currentur”

Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine used by over 200 million people worldwide to treat both acute and chronic conditions. Homeopathy is second-largest and the fastest-growing medicine in the world. It is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’(Similia Similbus Currentur) based on Law of Similars or that a medicine can cure a sick person if it can cause a similar sickness in a healthy person. It is based on the following basic principles or doctrines namely law of similars, law of minimum, law of simplex, doctrine of drug dynamisation, doctrine of vital force and doctrine of potentisation. In other words, a substance taken in small amounts will cure the same symptoms it causes if it were taken in large amounts.

HOMEOPATHY
HOMEO = Is the Greek Omoios which means “Similar”
PATHY = Pathos which means “Suffering”  The Greek word “pathisi” comes from the same root, “pathisi” is disease.

Homeopathy is based on Law of Similars. What is Law of Similars, that can cause that can cure in minimum doses. Your energy your life force is the pattern it expresses in the body. Like cures like- Law of Similars. When two disturbances which are very similar meet  in your life force, then one heals the other. Like if two dissimilar diseases meet in your body if you have constipation and you get alopathic medicines, which body will recognize as foreign substance, enemy and will start fighting with it. What will cause this process, how body will fight with? First reaction will be diarhea- pathological, chemical effect of what the patient had taken. But after that, the body will react to diarhhea with reaction of constipation.

How homeopathy acts

Though Dr Hahnemann in his Organon has said that it is not important how the homeopathic medicine acts and not to put much labour in understanding the modus operandi our inquisitive mind always dwells on something unknown and till we don’t find it we are not satisfied. According to Hahnemann homeopathic medicines are like artificial disease producing powers which when given according to law of similars to a patient will create an artificial disease in his body which is similar and stronger than the natural disease already existing in his body. This artificial disease based on its higher strength takes the place of natural disease and drives it out of system and since the dose of medicine is under the control of homeopath when the medicine is stopped even the artificial disease goes away. That’s why there is always an aggravation of symptoms when a exact Similimum or medicine is given to a patient. Modern homeopaths call homeopathic medicines as immunmodulators acting on the psychoneuroendocrine axis and promoting the healing of immunity and thus driving off of the disease. Both modern as well as contemporary homeopaths believe that homeopathic medicines are not directed to the disease but the individual and hence reinforcing the immunity or the vital force as it is called
MODUS OPERANDI
Homeopathy views the man as a whole and not as separate parts and hence when a homeopath takes a detailed history of a patient in question he will not only consider what the patient is suffering from but also give a lot of importance to the circumstances which were antecedent to the development of the problem known as ailments from and also the circumstances in which the problem is made worse or better in homeopathic terms known as aggravating and ameliorating modalities. He also gives a lot of importance to family and past history of that individual which helps him in delineating various traits and tendencies in this individual. Lastly he gives utmost importance in unfolding the man behind the  patient and tries to reach the core of that individual through his mental make up and his reactions to various situations in life. Ultimately he corroborates all his physical and mental symptoms and comes to the homeopathic remedy which is only one and tailor made for that particular person only. Thus homeopathy individualizes the patient and differentiates one person from another even if they both have same physical problems.

History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was first discovered by a german allopath Dr Samuel Cristian Friedrich Hahnemann son of a porcelain painter in Meissen ,Germany in the year 1790. Dr Samuel Hahnemann was a MD and also a linguist, he knew many languages so when he was dissatisfied with the then existing system of medicine he denounced allopathy and started translating books. Once when he was translating the Cullens Materia Medica from German to english he came across a para that Cinchona bark cures malaria because it is bitter and astringent in nature but Hahnemann was a hard core scientist. He thought all the drugs available at that time were bitter then why they didnt cure malaria why only cinchona and so he decided to prove cinchona on himself and started taking cinchona juice twice a day and to his surprise developed malaria like symptoms. When he stopped the juice his symptoms disappeared. Thus dawned on him that cinchona cured malaria because cinchona had the power to cause malaria and a drug that can cause symptoms in a healthy person can cure the same symptoms in a diseased person This was the Law of Similars or Similia similibus Currentur or lets likes to be cured by likes. This was the discovery of homeopathy which he announced to the world in the year 1796.
